A stage of the Tour de France of Digital Accessibility under the patronage of Axelle Lemaire, State Secretary for Digital Technology. 

The Museum of Toulouse and the association BrailleNet invited culture stakeholders to discover inspiring projects and solutions that make culture accessible to everyone by using digital technology: mobile applications, iBeacon technology, online platforms, web accessibility, etc. This day provided an opportunity to share good practices, to meet one another, and to stimulate new ideas to make culture accessible to everyone.

The organisers

The Natural History Museum in Toulouse conducts a proactive policy when it comes to welcoming members of the public with disabilities. Armed with its accessibility unit of three specialised facilitators (visual, mental and hearing impairments), the museum recently saw its efforts rewarded via the “heritage for all” prize, awarded by the ministry of culture and communication, and by the granting of the Tourism and Disability Label for the Museum’s site in the centre of town and the museum gardens.

 

The BrailleNet association has been working since 1997 to make digital technology accessible to people with disabilities, and therefore to improve their inclusion in society. It sets up research projects, develops assistive reading services, and trains and supports professionals so they can make their digital projects accessible.

The Tour de France of Digital Accessibility 

Under the patronage of and in collaboration with Axelle Lemaire, State Secretary for Digital Technology, this Tour de France aimed at highlighting sectors where digital accessibility is a high-potential driver to improve the inclusion of people with disabilities. From November 2015 to November 2016, the association BrailleNet organised 12 stages across France to tackle the main challenges posed by digital accessibility in education, training, research, business, and regional and local authorities. They also put the spotlight on assistive technology for reading, accessibility of culture, and connected objects.
