Concours de nouvelles

EDITION 2021

RACINES

What if we were to question the relationship that man has with animals? Would he seek to satisfy an emotional need, to touch the savage, to subjugate him? ... But if we were completely mistaken? Research has raised the hypothesis that it would be the cat who sought our company and not the other way around.

recto flyer concours littéraire de nouvelles museum de toulouse HISTOIRES NATURELLES Theme: STORIES ABOUT THE NATURAL WORLD

The competition unfolded on the blog http://nouvelles-histoiresnaturelles.tumblr.com/ . 79 short stories were received, mainly from France, but also from several other countries: see where the entries came from

The literary lead-in starts with this photograph taken in a taxidermy laboratory (late 19th century) with Victor Bonhenry mounting a primate. City of Toulouse, Municipal Archives, 51FI1206. See the photograph in a large format.

A paper copy can also be ordered from our partner Edilivre.

Expanded theme for the Individual Authors category:
Write a short story that places the photograph opposite (or the situation that it represents) at the centre of your plot. It can be the starting point or a part of your story.

Expanded theme for the School categories:

On 13 January 1912, a strange instant-petrification epidemic hit all of the animals at Toulouse Zoo. The unfortunate beasts were taken to the Museum, to the very famous laboratory of Professor Ebénézer Lafigasse. This wise man and veterinary surgeon – known all over the world for his work on viral immobility in primates – got to work immediately.
What he discovered that morning while he was examining Toto the chimpanzee left him completely speechless…

Basing yourself on this lead-in, write a story in French in the literary genre of your choice (detective novel, humorous, naturalist, etc).

Members of the panel of judges: Frédérik Lisak (Plume de Carotte publishing house), Florence Lamotte (Privat publishing house), Françoise Guiseppin (youth section at Ombre Blanche book shop), Josiane Séguéla (Toulouse Archives), Sylvie Marquez (Toulouse Polars du Sud), Evelyne Cocault (Belvédère reading club), Albert Lemant (children’s author), Christophe Chaffardon (children’s author), Christophe Pham-Ba (literature and languages, Education Authority), Pierre Colin (Theatre, Education Authority), Marion (Cabanis), Aude (Georges-Labit Museum), and Anne (Museum of Toulouse).

Theme: GROWING UP

The competition unfolded on the blog http://concours-grandir.tumblr.com/ . Almost 150 short stories were received from all over France and even the rest of the world: see where the entries came from.

Collections of the award-winning short stories are available for free in digital format:

A paper copy can also be ordered from our partner Edilivre.

Theme developed for the Individual Authors categories:

Grow up? This is an idea with many meanings that everyone will consider, hear and explore in relation to their own experiences and sensibilities. Do we talk about the biological development of a child? The construction of his mental abilities? Of his identity? Context plays a role too: the child has received his parents’ genetic heritage, he is confronted with complex cultural, social and economic environments, which are often in the process of changing. He comes up against challenges which shape his personality. So how will he grow up, or fail to grow up?

Basing yourself on this lead-in, write an original short story in French, in the literary genre of your choice.

Key words: learning, heredity, epigenetics, environment, identity, transmission, rites, Peter Pan complex

Members of the panel of judges: Hubert Stoecklin (child psychiatrist), Jean Songe (writer), Valérie Reich (2013 award winner), Sylviane Bonvin (Ethnology, Museum of Toulouse), Christophe Pham-Ba (literature and languages, Education Authority), Pierre Colin (theatre, Education Authority), Frédérik Lisak (Plumes de Carotte publishing house), Florence Lamotte (Privat publishing house), Catherine Desplas (Délires d'encre association), Anne Ingremeau and Anna De Torres (Museum of Toulouse libraries).

Expanded theme for the School Categories:

Imagine for example… A young falcon that has just this moment hatched finds itself in an unusual, unexpected environment, but which is not necessarily hostile to its development. Instead of being surrounded by the warm down of its mother, it is…elsewhere…

So how will it grow up? What will be its sources of education? What changes will it go through in relation to this new environment? What will it become?

Write a story presenting an original, fun or sensitive vision of the life of a young animal, torn away from its natural environment.

Key words: humour, atouchofcruelty, nofool, blankslate

See where the 62 short stories came from in France.

The first prize was awarded to the short story “L'étoile de Chéops” by Christophe Cousin. The panel of judges particularly appreciated the successful treatment of the difficult exercise of crossing two stories in parallel in a short text, as well as its historic and documentary dimension.

The second prize was awarded to the short story “Le fragment réparateur” by Chantal Le Guillou, a very contemporary short story in a clear and well-written style.

La planète croustillante” by Sauveur Padovano won the Special Prize for his highly original short story. You will appreciate this short story after a reading it a few times, as the beginning can be quite disconcerting!

Happy reading!
